· Performance

Grip/Traction The Continental™ rubber outsole provides reliable grip on dry, hard-packed trails, compacted dirt, and gravel. Lug depth is modest at 4mm, which is sufficient for buffed singletrack or fire road climbs, but insufficient for loose-over-hard surfaces or wet rock. On steep, loose descents, the lugs lack the bite needed for confidence, and the lack of a rock plate means sharp edges penetrate the forefoot on technical sections. This is a shoe for flowing trails, not scree fields.

Cushion/Feel The 28mm stack height is uniform front to back, creating a zero-drop geometry that promotes natural midfoot or forefoot striking. The EVA midsole feels moderately firm—like a trail version of a road racing flat, not a plush trainer. Ground feedback is high: you’ll feel every root, stone, and undulation underfoot. This is deliberate for agility and proprioception, but after 20+ km on rocky terrain, forefoot soreness becomes noticeable. The shoe compresses slightly on hard landings but lacks the rebound of a shoe with a plate (carbon or otherwise). It’s best for shorter efforts (up to 25 km) on forgiving surfaces.

Fit/Stability The upper is a thin, breathable mesh with minimal overlays. It wraps the foot snugly through the midfoot and heel, with a slightly narrow toebox. Runners with wide feet will find the forefoot tight, especially during long runs when feet swell. Lacing is secure and locks down the heel without slip. Stability is low: the shoe tilts on uneven ground due to the narrow platform and high stack-to-width ratio. There’s no arch support or medial post—this is a neutral shoe for efficient runners with strong foot mechanics.

Durability The outsole rubber is durable for a shoe in this weight class, but the mesh upper shows wear quickly from trail debris and sharp rocks. I’ve logged ~150 km and noticed pilling and small tears near the toebox flex points. The midsole retains its shape but compresses slightly over time. Expect ~250–350 km of usable life before performance degrades. Not a long-term investment, but acceptable for a lightweight race shoe.

· Who It's For

The ideal runner for the Terrex Speed Ultra is a lightweight, experienced trail runner (sub-70 kg) who prefers minimal shoes with high ground feedback. It suits fast efforts on smooth, non-technical trails like fire roads, packed dirt, or dry forest singletrack. It works well for speed workouts, short races (10–25 km), or “fast-and-light” mountain runs where carrying minimal gear matters more than cushioning.

· Who Should Look Elsewhere

Heavy runners (above 80 kg) will find the cushioning insufficient for longer distances. Runners needing arch support, stability features, or protection for technical terrain (rocky, rooty, or wet conditions) should skip this shoe. It’s also not suitable for beginners or those transitioning from high-drop road shoes—the zero-drop and lack of cushion require strong, conditioned foot and calf muscles.

· Verdict

The Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra is a niche, race-focused trail shoe that excels on smooth, dry terrain for lightweight, efficient runners. Its low weight, zero-drop platform, and high ground feel deliver a responsive ride, but it compromises on protection, stability, and durability for more technical or longer runs. At $165 AUD, it’s a fair price for a fast-specific shoe but not a daily trainer. If you value connection to the trail over plush comfort and run on non-technical ground, this is a solid, short-distance weapon. RunningGearDB score: 7.8/10
